Poor memory function associated with high blood sugar levels in Type 2 Diabetes sufferers
12 Feb 2009

A study which shows the ability to process information declines as average blood sugar levels increase in people with Type 2 Diabetes is further proof that inadequate blood glucose control is associated with poor memory function, it has been claimed.

Research conducted at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, US, which appears in this month's issue of Diabetes Care discovered an inverse relationship between average blood glucose levels over a two-to-three month time-frame and cognitive test scores.

According to principal investigator Dr Jeff Williamson, this suggests that poor memory function can be identified in patients before it develops into more acute memory loss.

Dr Williamson also stressed that steps need to be taken to ensure diabetes patients fully understand the consequences of their condition.

"People with Type 2 Diabetes and their health care providers need to be careful in situations where there is education and teaching about diabetes care, as patients may need a little more time to absorb and process information," he commented.

"Patients also need to be open to having a family member periodically making sure they are keeping track of managing their diabetes through monitoring, diet, exercise and medication."

More than two million people have diabetes in the UK alone.
